By 1 July 2025, all private rentals must meet the Healthy Homes Standards. This is the final compliance deadline for landlords who haven’t already had to meet the requirements — and the stakes are high. Failing to comply could result in financial penalties of up to $7,200.
If you're not yet fully compliant, now’s the time to act.
“The heating calculation is one of the most common areas landlords struggle with,” says the team at Healthy Homes New Zealand. “It can be tricky to determine which room counts as the 'main living area' and then calculate the heating requirement accurately.”
Other pitfalls include incomplete or unsupported compliance statements:
“We often see assessments where there’s not enough evidence to back up compliance claims, or work has been done to a low standard that won’t hold up under scrutiny.”
Quick wins to get ahead
Don’t wait. As we move closer to July 2025, demand for assessments and tradespeople is only going to increase.
Document thoroughly. If you’re compiling your own compliance statement, ensure you’ve got solid evidence.
Invest in long-term fixes. A permanent solution (e.g., proper window sealing by a carpenter) is better than a temporary patch job.
Landlords are responsible for ensuring the property meets and continues to meet the standards, but tenants can play a role too — like using extractor fans and ventilating rooms regularly to help reduce moisture.
myRent offers tools and resources to help landlords navigate compliance — from reminders to property-specific record-keeping.
Book with confidence
Even if you think your property is compliant, booking a professional Healthy Homes assessment gives you peace of mind and protects you from future claims.
Most inspections only take around 60 minutes for a standard 3-bedroom property. Assessors will check all five standards and provide a full report with any areas needing attention.
